About this site

What is Velkamittari.fi?

Velkamittari.fi is an independent visualization site that illustrates the development of Finland's central government debt. The goal is to make public financial data understandable without any political agenda or official communication pressure. The site is not an official government website and does not represent any political party, trade union, or other interest group.

What the site shows — and what it doesn't

The site shows the development of Finnish central government debt on a monthly basis since 2002. Data presented includes total debt, its breakdown into long-term and short-term components, debt as a percentage of GDP, interest expenses, and debt per capita. The real-time counter is a trend-based estimate, not an official second-by-second balance.

The site does not include the debts of municipalities, joint municipal authorities, social security funds, or state enterprises. The total public sector debt is therefore higher than the central government debt shown here.

Sources and methodology

Debt data comes from the open API maintained by the State Treasury (tutkihallintoa.fi). GDP and population data are published by Statistics Finland (stat.fi). The site updates automatically once a month when new figures are released. The real-time counter is based on the most recently published monthly figure and the average growth rate over the past 12 months.

The figures presented are based on public data and have been verified with care. The site does not draw political conclusions or offer economic policy recommendations.
